I thought I’d share what I’ve found over the last few days.
I got Ableton running flawlessly for DJ sets with Touchable Pro on a Surface Go 2 with the M3 chip. I turned wifi off and it still works. The Surface Go 2 is running both Ableton and Touchable at the same time. This is incredible.
I’m not confident enough to use this alone in front of people, but my friend is having a pool party this weekend and that’s a perfect setting to give it a shot. I can see this set up being great for both DJing and for musical sketches.
I don’t have any 3rd party plugs working, just mixing the two tracks using volume, eq, fade to grey, reverb, and beat repeat. I keep the Live set pretty bare bones to keep down resources needed. This is perfect for DJing or producing on the go, and then when I need to get sounds or large sample libraries, I’ll simply move the set over there and replace the native Ableton instruments with 3rd party plugs that I usually use.
If anything, this has me excited to get to know Operator and the other native Live devices much better, as Touchable is great for sound design with the native on screen support.
I’m still going to try to get it working using the Surface Go 2 as only a controller and connect via Wifi Direct to my production laptop. A lot of places I play music don’t have access to Wifi, and I’d rather not rely on that. If I can keep it on an ad hoc network or simply use just the Surface to run Ableton and be the controller, then I am so happy with Touchable, it’s amazing. So far, so good!
